About this plant
Sansevieria 'Star Canary' is a compact and striking variety, prized for the contrast between its fleshy, upright, and rigid leaves, with canary yellow tones that evolve into deeper greens as the leaves mature and under varying light conditions. Some commercial descriptions describe it as a small sansevieria with thick, bright yellow leaves that can shade to green, sometimes with very visible light margins or lines.
Its growth is slow and orderly, forming a rosette or compact clump, sending up new shoots from the base via rhizomes. It is neither a climbing nor a trailing plant: its appeal lies precisely in its sculptural, clean, and upright form, so characteristic of sansevierias.
What makes it special
The most interesting feature of Sansevieria 'Star Canary' is its luminous coloration, less common than that of the more typical green or variegated sansevierias. The yellow doesn't appear as a simple border, but can cover a large part of the young leaf, creating a very attractive contrast with the green areas that develop as the plant matures.
This plant is especially interesting for those seeking a different kind of sansevieria, one that is manageable in size and visually striking without needing a large specimen. It has value as an accessible collector's plant: it's not overly delicate, but it does offer a genuine variation within a well-known genus.
Grown in El Campito Verde
At El Campito Verde, we cultivate and acclimate our sansevierias under controlled conditions, avoiding the logic of immediate purchase and resale. This variety thrives with good light, ventilation, and judicious watering, in a mineral-rich, airy mix designed to reduce the risk of excess moisture at the roots, a critical factor for this type of plant.
Basic care
Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels, but the color will be more stable and defined with good lighting. Avoid strong, direct sunlight indoors behind glass during the hottest hours.
Watering: Sparingly and infrequently. It is best to let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering is the main risk.
Substrate: very well-draining, with a high mineral content. Heavy or permanently damp substrates should not be used.
Humidity: It does not need high ambient humidity. It adapts well to normal indoor environments.
Temperature: ideally above 15°C. It should be protected from intense cold and, above all, from the combination of cold and a damp substrate.
Difficulty level: easy, provided watering is controlled. It's a good option for those who want a hardy plant, but it shouldn't be treated like a tropical plant requiring frequent watering.
It can be considered toxic if ingested, so it is advisable to keep it out of the reach of pets or small children.
Before you buy
Each plant is a living specimen and may exhibit natural differences compared to the photographs: size, number of leaves, intensity of yellow, proportion of green, rosette shape, or growth rate. These variations are part of the plant's normal behavior.
