About this plant
Senecio macroglossus ‘Variegatus’, sometimes known as variegated wax ivy, is a trailing or climbing plant with thin, flexible stems, usually greenish to purple in color, and shiny, somewhat waxy, triangular or slightly lobed leaves, very similar to those of ivy.
Its main appeal lies in the contrast between the green of the leaves and the cream or whitish margins, which can vary in intensity depending on the light and the stage of growth. Under good conditions, it develops long stems that can be allowed to cascade from a hanging pot or trained on a support to achieve a more upright and structured shape.
What makes it special
Although it visually resembles ivy, it does not belong to the Hedera genus. It has a fleshier texture and a brighter appearance, with clean variegation that adds visual interest without being overly delicate. It is an interesting plant for those looking for a unique climbing or hanging plant, with a tropical and succulent feel, but without the demanding care of other, more sensitive collector's plants.
It thrives in good light and well-drained soil. Its combination of glossy leaves, flexible stems, and cream variegation makes it especially useful for vertical displays, shelving, or as a lightweight support.
Grown in El Campito Verde
At El Campito Verde, we cultivate and acclimate our plants in controlled environments, adjusting light, irrigation, ventilation, and humidity according to the needs of each species. In the case of Senecio macroglossus ‘Variegatus’, we use a well-draining and stable substrate mix designed to promote good root oxygenation and reduce the risk of overwatering.
This is not a plant purchased for immediate resale: it is kept under observation to check its response to cultivation before being put on sale.
Basic care
Light: It needs plenty of indirect light to maintain compact growth and attractive variegation. It can tolerate some gentle sun, especially in the morning, but direct, strong sunlight should be avoided indoors behind glass.
Watering: Allow the substrate to partially dry between waterings. It is not advisable to keep it constantly wet.
Substrate: aerated and draining, with a good mineral proportion or materials that prevent compaction.
Humidity: It adapts well to medium ambient humidity. It does not need extremely humid conditions.
Temperature: Best kept indoors in bright light or outdoors in a sheltered spot in a mild climate. It is not a suitable plant for frost.
Difficulty level: easy to medium. It's not complicated, but it benefits from good light and judicious watering.
Like many plants in the Senecio group, it is advisable to avoid ingestion by pets or children.
Before you buy
Plants are living things, and each specimen may show slight differences compared to the photographs: stem length, number of leaves, intensity of variegation, proportion of white or cream, and growth habit. We always select healthy, well-established specimens.
